... The theory of extreme values is well developed, but still extends into further fields of applications and more realistic models.

Some of the statistical aspects have been well known for a long time, but with the change in statistical analysis of data using more explorative tools and interactive software, the statistics of extremes has also changed. Such an analysis is now easily possible with the software XTREMES, which was developed by the two authors. In the present book they introduce the reader to basic extreme value theory and its statistical aspects, which can be easily explored with the excellent and user-friendly software. ...

The book is very carefully and concisely written; it is well-structured and many small subsections deal with the all-important aspects of extreme value theory. They contain the statistical facts, given mostly without proofs, which can be found in more theoretical textbooks. To follow the discussion of the textbook, the interested reader should be familiar with the basics of statistical procedures. He will enjoy the richness of the well-presented methods, of which some have been only very recently developed.
